Nizhny Novgorod mathematician Artemy Grigoryevich Mayer and his course of history of mathematics

Polotovskiy G.M.

Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod, polotovsky@gmail.com

1 pp. (accepted)

The Professor of Gorky (Nizhni Novgorod) university Artemiy Grigoryevich Mayer (1905 – 1951) is the known expert in the field of the qualitative theory of the differential equations, the employee of academician A.A.Andronov. He is the author of a number of classical results, among which construction of a topological invariant ("scheme") for dynamic systems on the plane (together with E.A.Leontovich), a solution of the Birkhoff problem about the central trajectories, the results about dynamic systems on two-dimensional surfaces. However A.G.Mayer's biography practically isn't reflected in literature. The explanation consists mainly in the following: for many years A.G.Mayer gave a course of history of mathematics; in this course on a number of questions he adhered to not canonical points of view. It was a reason to organize in 1950 the persecution of A.G.Mayer by the council of department.

In the talk the A.G.Mayer biography and the history of condemnation of "ideological mistakes of Professor Mayer in a course of history of mathematics" will be considered on the basis of the remained archival documents.
